Earlier this month, a fire broke out along Hotel Circle South. Fire trucks, engines, water tenders, battalion chiefs, and even a helicopter were reportedly called in to battle the flames before they reached the Legacy Resort Hotel and Spa. The first responders protected the hotel and the guests.
But at other hotels and motels across San Diego County this year, not everyone has been so fortunate. Some guests checked in — only never to check out.

On July 28 in Oceanside, firefighters forced their way into a Motel 6 room after responding to reports of a blaze. Inside the room, they found one person, who was "pronounced dead on scene," according to ONSCENE.TV. At the time, it was unclear if the victim’s death was directly related to the fire; that the Oceanside Fire Department was still investigating the cause of the fire.
On July 19, a Reddit user posting under the name SweetStrawberry1996 wrote about witnessing a man jump from the third floor of The Westin San Diego Bayview, calling it “very traumatic." In similar threads, other people who said they work in the hotel industry remarked that suicides in hotels and motels are unfortunately common, but rarely reported in mainstream news reports because of concerns over copycats.
On March 4, gunfire erupted at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley. When San Diego police arrived, they found 19-year-old Damian Martinez of El Monte dead in a hallway and a 23-year-old man outside the lobby with non-life-threatening injuries, according to NBC 7 San Diego. The suspected shooter — 29-year-old Kevin Casey Larin of Northridge — was later found in the parking lot and taken into custody. Investigators stated that the three men knew each other and were in San Diego for work.
Just a week or so prior, another tragic and surreal scene unfolded at the Motel 6 on Montrose Court in El Cajon. According to NBC 7 San Diego, 24-year-old Richard Anthony Leyva was accused of killing his 51-year-old mother, Jamison Webster, and placing her body in the trunk of her car. When relatives went looking for her the next day, they found the car at the motel and discovered her remains inside. Prosecutors alleged that Leyva then tried to take off in the car, striking his brother before leading officers on a high-speed pursuit that ended in a crash and Leyva's arrest.
On January 17, police were called to the Motel 6 on Hotel Circle in Mission Valley, where they found a 24-year-old woman dead inside a room. According to the Times of San Diego, the victim showed visible injuries, leading detectives to suspect foul play. Officers in the report said two men were inside the room, including the woman's 19-year-old boyfriend, who was arrested on suspicion of murder.
