The idea of writing about old places in San Diego County has been something I’ve been mulling around for years – but I kept putting it off because coming up with the parameters was a lot harder than I imagined. In the end, I decided to focus on businesses and restaurants that have been in the same place, with the same name and line of business, for at least 50 years.
This two-story Spanish-style building, situated on the south end of the 101 just before the road dips down past the Buena Vista Lagoon into Carlsbad, has been home to the Moose Lodge – part of the International Loyal Order of Moose – since 1948. Age took a toll on both the building and the membership, but in 2015, a group of locals took over the club's charter, repaired and renovated the building, and began bringing in live music to attract a younger, hipper crowd. Since then, the Moose Lodge, still outfitted with its original long bar and adjacent dance floor, has hosted the likes of Pat Travers, former Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair and homegrown guitar hero Stevie Salas, whose popular '80s North County band, This Kids, plays occasional reunion shows there.
