Pepper Tree Frosty
This little ice cream stand is a true Vista landmark, its white-walled, blue-roof exterior a throwback to the drive-ins of the '50s. Shakes, cones, and burgers have been on the menu ever since the place opened in August 1953 as part of the Tastee Freez franchise. Acquired by Chuy and Delia Villasenor in 1960, it was rebranded a short time later as Pepper Tree — after the pepper trees lining the nearby creek — when the couple exited their franchise agreement and decide to go independent. Since then, Pepper Tree, still run by the Villasenor family, has remained mostly unchanged, with the exception of outdoor benches and a gazebo built in the '80s. It’s a popular lunchtime and after-school hangout for students from nearby Vista High as well as longtime residents like Mark Pressey, who says, “They make great freezes, which are hard to find. My favorites is the Dr. Pepper Freeze. Oh, and the Chocolate Banana Malt milkshake.”
