Three poems by E.B. White for his 126th birthday

Also, the 40th anniversary of his death

A Natural History

The spider, dropping down from twig,

Unfolds a plan of her devising,

A thin premeditated rig

To use in rising.

And all that journey down through space,

In cool descent and loyal hearted,

She spins a ladder to the place

From where she started.

Thus I, gone forth as spiders do

In spider’s web a truth discerning,

Attach one silken thread to you

For my returning.

Dog Around the Block

Dog around the block, sniff,

Hydrant sniffing, corner, grating,

Sniffing, always, starting forward,

Backward, dragging, sniffing backward,

Leash at taut, leash at dangle,

Leash in people’s feet entangle—

Sniffing dog, apprised of smellings,

Love of life, and fronts of dwellings,

Meeting enemies,

Loving old acquaintance, sniff,

Sniffing hydrant for reminders,

Leg against the wall, raise,

Leaving grating, corner greeting,

Chance for meeting, sniff, meeting,

Meeting, telling, news of smelling,

Nose to tail, tail to nose,

Rigid, careful, pose,

Liking, partly liking, hating,

Then another hydrant, grating,

Leash at taut, leash at dangle,

Tangle, sniff, untangle,

Dog around the block, sniff.

Wedding Day in the Rockies

The charm of riding eastward through Wyoming

Is not so much the grandeur and the view

As that it is an exercise in homing

And that my fellow passenger is you.

In fourteen years of this our strange excursion

The scenic points of love have not grown stale

For that my mind in yours has found the diversion

And in your heart my heart could never fail.

It’s fourteen years today since we began it—

This sonnet crowds a year in every line—

Love were an idle drudge if time outran it

And time were stopped indeed were you not mine.

The rails go on together toward the sky

Even (the saying goes) as you and I.

E.B. White (1899-1985) was an American writer and stylist who is best remembered among children for Charlotte’s Web and among college students for The Elements of Style (i.e., “Strunk and White”), a book on basic principles of English prose which he updated from its original form as written by his college English professor, William Strunk, Jr. In 1927, White joined The New Yorker as one its first and premiere staff writers and eventually became a contributing editor to the publication, a position he maintained for almost six decades. He was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in recognition of his life’s work in 1978. He was born on July 11, 1899, in Mt. Vernon, NY.
