Even when brewers leave San Diego, it’s hard not to be drawn back to “The Capital of Craft.” Take for example Tarantula Hill Brewing Company, a Thousand Oaks brewery with strong San Diego connections that has struck a deal with Cohn Restaurant Group to brew house beers for several local eateries and watering holes, including Pacific Social, Draft Republic, Prado, and La Mesa’s Coin Haus gameroom/barroom.
“The founders of Tarantula Hill worked at Stone for many years," explains Jon Boyle, Operations Manager at Coin Haus. "They have had a strong relationship with many of the breweries in SD. When Rouleur Brewing downsized their brewery and decided to vacate the San Marcos location, the team at Tarantula Hill jumped at the opportunity to return to San Diego — and to brew beers for CRG. The partnership worked out perfectly, because they could feature all their specialty beers next door at Draft Republic San Marcos’ bowling alley bar.” Boyle’s “beercade” is another beneficiary, featuring two Tarantula Hill beers on tap.
The first, Coin Haus IPA (also known as CRG West Coast IPA), is a 7% ABV, moderately bitter ale featuring the piney aromas typical of the style. Boyle says, “We use Yakima County Mosiac, which gives a sweet citrus flavor, Yakima County Simcoe giving classic piney aromas, and Crosby Idaho 7 fleshing it all out with tropical fruit flavors. We do not use crystal malts, so it has a lighter, golden color. It is a classic West Coast IPA: balanced, lean on the palate, clean, fresh, and not astringent like many others.”
The other beer is Coin Haus Blonde, which offers notes of sweet Hawaiian bread and a crisp finish. Boyle explains where the ale gets some of its sweetness, “We add a small percentage of honey malt into the grist and ferment at a lower temperature than other blondes. When we were deciding on the formula, we wanted to ensure our Blonde would not be boring and would show crispness.”
The Coin Haus beercade also features a variety of other beers on tap, both local and from out of town. Human People’s Piknik Pilsner, Harland’s Lilikoi Sour, Great Notion’s The Bear IPA, and Maine Brewing’s Lunch IPA, to name a few.
Patrons looking for something other than beer to sip on between rounds of Sink It, Halo, or tournament-style Pac-Man can indulge in other options. Boyle continues, “In addition to beer, we also serve cider, hard seltzer, wine, and cocktails on tap. The selection rotates but we feature the Craftwell Chocolate Espresso Martini, Seaborn Mango-Habanero Margarita, and others. We also carry alcoholic slushies, with Watermelon Red Bull and Piña Colada being the most popular.”
