Mayor says planned handover of Balboa Park’s United States cottage to Afghanistan was “bound to be chaotic.”

Gloria’s shame?

Though they have decided not to keep the cottage’s generous supply of American flags, the Taliban has reportedly confiscated an Apple MacBook Pro, three beanbag chairs, and a Nespresso coffee maker left behind during the hasty evacuation.

“Honestly, this was [ex-Mayor] Faulconer’s mess; I just inherited it,” says Mayor Todd Gloria of the Taliban’s takeover of the United States’ cottage in Balboa Park’s International Cottages section. “He’s the one who made the deal with Afghanistan to hand over control of the cottage when we did, as a goodwill gesture in honor of our withdrawal from the country. But I guess he got so busy with gearing up for a run at Governor that he forgot to make a plan. I’ve had to make some tough calls in the wake of what followed — leaving the volunteer janitor behind was not an easy call, but we weren’t about to give the new tenants the keys to a pigsty. And of course, we thought the government that would be choosing the new staff would be…not the Taliban. We are continuing our communications with their leaders, and hope to find a way to get our man back as soon as possible.”
