“We were the dumbasses who showed up late and missed the presentation of our award,” says Edgar Alminar of electronic hip-hop duo Jumbotron, this year’s San Diego Music Awards winner for Best New Artist. Based in Point Loma and La Mesa, the band features Alminar (aka DJ GarGar of Irradio and the Kneehighs) with his longtime Kneehighs collaborator MC DayDay. “We came together in early 2017, when we were bored and decided to make some music,” according to Alminar.
“Our music is fun, very high energy and bouncy, and it even provides a cardio workout,” says DayDay. The duo released their album Carefree Coliseum late last year, and recently shot a video on local beaches for the track “Big Booty Butt Cheeks.”
What’s in your music player?
Gar: “Jay-Z’s 4:44, I have to keep this in rotation, as a reminder to be a responsible adult. Also, Daniel Caesar’s Freudian, he’s one of the best R&B artists out there right now.”
Favorite websites?
DayDay: “ESPN.com for bad fantasy football advice, and chase.com, to check my negative checking account balance.”
Top guilty pleasures?
Gar: “Sitting on my ass and not working out, going 70 miles an hour on the freeway, and bad food. Oh, and House of Cards. What, too soon?”
Mac or PC?
Gar: “Mac all day. I hate being PC.”
Where do you hang out?
Gar: “Bub’s has great food. It used to be Chuck E. Cheese’s, they had great games. I still have a voucher for 103 tickets.”
Video game jones?
DayDay: “Super Mario Brothers, on the original Nintendo. I’m still trying to beat level 1-1.”
Favorite band you’ve never been in?
Gar: “That’s hard to narrow down to one, but the Foo Fighters are the first one to come to mind. I love rock and roll, so put another dime in the jukebox, baby.”
If you could lunch with anyone?
Gar: “Dr. Dre. I’d want to pick his brain as to how he makes classic after classic.”
Best advice?
Gar: “Instagram gives me priceless, inspirational advice every day. Too much to sift through.”
DayDay: “Gar tells me to shut the hell up all the time. It’s very effective in all settings.”
Worst job?
Gar: “I’ve only had four but, if I had to pick one, it’d be working at the front desk at Billeting at the Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar. It was a bunch of rigid people trying to pull rank on a civilian with no rank.”
Craziest thing you ever did for money?
Gar: “I sold my soul to music. I’m still waiting on that check, though.”
To do before you die?
Gar: “See every country in the world.”
DayDay: “How much chicken will fit in the bucket?”
Phobias?
Gar: “I used to be deathly afraid of dogs and the dark.”
Song that best describes your life?
Gar: “‘I’m Too Sexy’ by Right Said Fred. ‘I’m too sexy for my hat, too sexy for my hat, what do you think about that?’”
Best gig?
Gar: “The Kneehighs opened for Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony, DJ Quik, and Kendrick Lamar, then known as K. Dot, at [UCSD's] Rimac Arena.”
Something we don’t know about you?
Gar: “I’ve never seen Game of Thrones.”
DayDay: “I’ve never seen a full episode of the Twilight Zone.”
