Alejandro Castillo, Jr., a former substitute teacher at Chula Vista's Los Altos Elementary School, was sentenced yesterday (February 29) to seven years in prison for receiving images of child pornography.

According to public record, Castillo had collected a significant number of unlawful images, including those of bondage and degradation. He had communicated with minors over the internet about sexual conduct.

He was receiving the pornography during periods of time when he had sensitive positions of trust at camps and schools. Judge Michael M. Anello said Castillo's conduct was "higher on the scale" of child pornography because of his position of trust with children.

Is this enough for him to be fired from his job - or is the teachers union fighting that?

ImJustABill: I don't know what the union is doing. I strongly doubt it is backing this guy. Best, Don Bauder

He was a substitute teacher, so I doubt he was a member of the union. Even if he were, the union would not defend this kind of behavior. That's not what unions do.

Javajoe25: Agreed. I don't think the union will touch this one. Best, Don Bauder
