The grim reaper has taken a major toll on the world’s music community this year and San Diego has been not been exempt. Here’s a look back at those we lost in 2016:

January 2, Mark Hammond (64), trumpeter, head of the Navy Music Program until his retirement in 2002, Marty Conley’s Big Band Express.

January 31, Nicki Carano (48), drummer with Tir Na Nog, Christopher Dale, Glassy, Camel Tones, In My Humble Opinion, Nectarine, Haute Flash, 3DVA, Radio Rage, etc.

February 9, Joshua Whitney (42), pianist and singer with Grow.

March 4, Gary Ferrito (62), frontman of Belair Boys, Kanickie’s Tribute to Elvis, bit-part actor in Bring It On as father of one of the cheerleaders.

March 26, Joe Marillo (83), jazz saxophonist, jazz promoter/teacher, appeared with Jimmy Cavallo & the Houserockers in the 1956 film Rock, Rock, Rock, recorded with Mike Wofford, etc.

So many beloved artists indeed, --just wanted to also mention National City's Johnny "Cobra" Romero who passed away July 4th, 2016. He was a guitarist who started out doing session work on Crescent Records with soul artist June Jackson, performed with The Majestics (among many others), and led his own group, The Tijuana Surfers up until his death.
