Baby won’t be bullied

“It’s been a tough but empowering year” for GBG frontwoman.
“It’s been a tough but empowering year” for GBG frontwoman.

“It’s been a tough but empowering year,” Gone Baby Gone frontwoman Veronica “Dizzy” Collins tells the Reader. “We neglected a lot of our internal stuff...we brought in the new year saying goodbye to two of our bandmates, due to creative and personal differences. It was, and is, pretty ugly.

“Immediately after parting ways, we hit the studio to write our new EP and began tryouts for a bassist and rhythm guitarist.” Collins and guitarist David Johnson (aka Jonesy) remain the core members, with longtime bassist Jaime Jurado now replaced by Wyatt Daniels (who’s also covering guitar in place of the departed Giovanni Gomez) and backed by drummer Craig Hoffman. “We’re still in search of permanent members that can tour and meet the criteria we are looking for,” says Collins.

Problems also arose with the planned EP. “Originally, it was to be one EP released in June, but because of a few creative differences with the studio and producer, I made the call and decided to start over. New producer, new studio, and old ideas. I feel, as artists and songwriters, it’s very important to stay true to your vision, even if it means having to come up with more money and moving a release date.

“Bottom line, I won’t be bullied, rushed, or changed into some pretty pop package.”

Past Event

Gone Baby Gone, Jessica Hernandez & t/Deltas

  • Friday, September 5, 2014, 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.
  • House of Blues, 1055 Fifth Avenue, San Diego
  • 21+ / $5 - $20

The revised recordings will be released over the course of two EPs this month, with the first dropping September 5 at downtown’s House of Blues. You Think You Know, but You Have No Idea will be available as a CD and digital download, featuring four songs (including a duet with Pat Beers of Schitzophonics) plus a hidden track. Under Covers (three covers and a hidden number) will be a free download on Reverbnation before appearing on CD in October.

For the House of Blues show, which includes Dinosaur Ghost and Detroit’s Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas, Collins promises “a whole lotta rock and roll grinding, shimmying, and shaking.”

As for upcoming endeavors, “We plan to hit the road — Jonesy finally got his passport — and play shows at venues in cities we’ve never been to. Also, the plan is to marry and get divorced a few times, preferably in Vegas or Berlin, to some foreign language-speaking pop stars [laughs]. Or bartenders.”
