Border Patrol agents arrested two men in a Volkswagen Jetta on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms, according to a January 22 release.
Around 10 p.m. on the 21st, agents observed the pair "engaging in suspicious behavior" outside a gas station in Jacumba, just before Interstate 8 begins its eastward descent from the Laguna Mountains into the Imperial Valley. Agents followed after the men got into a Jetta sedan and proceeded to drive "erratically" around the Jacumba area before entering the freeway heading east.
The agents continued following the car until it reached the bottom of the 4000-foot grade before attempting to pull the driver over. Upon approaching the vehicle, they noted that the 21-year-old passenger had a small quantity of marijuana in his lap, which he admitted to having smoked in the car. Searching the vehicle, agents discovered the mushrooms under the driver's seat.
The Jetta was seized by the Border Patrol, while its occupants were transported to a processing facility and eventually San Diego County Jail, where they face state controlled substance charges.
