The right time, place, and bait

The So Cal boats took the day off yesterday due to weather and rough seas. We should get a good idea how the local Yellowtail and offshore Tuna bites were affected by the front in the next couple days as it lays down out there.

Not much on the beach other than a few overworked surfers, though the surf fishing has been good up to just before these fronts, especially in North County and the OC.

Looking at the lakes, the Rainbow Trout have come on good to 10 pounds, especially after the recent plants in Jennings, Dixon, Santee Lakes 3 & 4, Cuyamaca and Wohlford. The right time, place, and bait are key as always, but nobody is leaving empty-handed. Nightcrawlers and various Powerbait varieties are working well for those not throwing lures. Panther-Martin and Rooster-tail spinners and the usual assortment of spoons seem to get good action where they are.

The Red Rooster III is back down the line and fishing the Ridge area today off Bahia Magdelena for school-sized Yellowfin Tuna and fat Wahoo. The last two days have been a Wahoo-fest at Alijos Rocks, with the 28 anglers aboard scoring on 225 of the speedy, and very tasty, torpedoes...

If you haven't yet, I suggest a grilled wahoo taco or even some good smoked wahoo from Point Loma Seafood, or any such decent place with fresh smoked fish. You just might understand why someone would want to get on a small boat in a big ocean and travel a thousand miles to catch a 70 pound fish that can swim over 60 miles and hour and has a mouth full of razor-blades.

Trout plants for this week:

Dec 17: Jennings received 1200 pounds of Nebraska Tailwalkers, Lakes Wohlford (1500), Cuyamaca (1200) and Poway (1500), were stocked with Rainbow Trout.

Dec 22: Dixon and Wohlford will receive another 1500 pounds.
