Suspected thieves caught at Temecula’s Chaparral High School
Nocturnal foray doesn’t help escape effort
Two men were arrested and booked into jail on burglary and other charges after police responded to an alarm at Temecula's Chaparral High School at around 3:20 a.m. on September 30.
Arrestees Adam Macciocchi, 22, and Dustin Harris, 26, both of Temecula, are also suspects in the burglaries of two other schools in the city that took place within the past month, according to authorities.
Sgt. Kevin McDonald of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said electronics were targeted and a significant amount of property was stolen from the schools each time.
“It’s safe to say thousands of dollars of stolen property plus damage at each location,” McDonald said.
Broken glass at the administration building at Chaparral prompted the early Monday morning burglar alarm, and responding officers from the Temecula Police Department found two male suspects hiding inside a campus building.
“Both suspects ran from the officers and one suspect was taken into custody immediately,” according to McDonald.
Macciocchi was arrested at the scene but the other suspect escaped.
“Officers checked the campus and learned the suspects broke into the school and were loading property to steal when they were interrupted by the officers,” McDonald said.
Backpacks and duffel bags were used to hold the property. A school-district official said an overhead projector was one item stolen from the teachers’ lounge inside the administration building.
Investigators developed information that identified Harris as the outstanding suspect, and he was arrested at his residence later the same afternoon.
Harris was charged with four felony counts, including vandalism.
McDonald reported that police received search warrants for both subjects’ homes and that during the searches they uncovered evidence linked to the previous break-ins at both Chaparral and Temecula Valley high schools.
Both men are being held on $5000 bail at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta. McDonald said additional charges are anticipated for the two other school burglaries.
