Summer: The Donna Summer Musical
If fans of Donna Summer go just for the music, the rewards are many. Led by the amazing LaChanze, as an older Donna Summer doing a concert, the Des McAnuff-directed production out discos disco with one blazing effect after another (Robert Brill's set's a black and white Rubik's Cube on overdrive; as is Sergio Trujillo's kaleidoscopic choreography). LaChanze stops the show several times. But the book, with mere snippets for scenes, is thin as a CD. The musical pays an all-points-bulletin tribute to the great vocalist. But along with being skimpy, the book feels tentative, as if holding back certain truths.Worth a try.
