Payare Conducts Beethoven & Shostakovich
ARTISTS Rafael Payare, conductor Stefan Jackiw, violin REPERTOIRE BEETHOVEN: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 11 in G minor, Op. 103: The Year 1905 Please join us 45 minutes before the concert for "What's the Score?", a lively talk about the composers and the repertoire given by commentator Nuvi Mehta from the stage of Copley Symphony Hall. ABOUT Dmitri Shostakovich’s cinematic retelling of the ill-fated Russian Revolution of 1905 offers hope to “the people who have stopped believing because the cup of evil has run over.” Filled with student protest songs, this became one of his most popular pieces since the Leningrad Symphony of World War II. Our evening opens with the San Diego Symphony debut of acclaimed violinist Stefan Jackiw in Ludwig van Beethoven’s heroic Violin Concerto. This concert is part of the San Diego Symphony's season-long celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday.
