Valentine's Day Benefit Concert
The evening will kick off with the Museum’s own 1st Edition Jazz Band, followed by performances by Carlos Alvarez and Serena Geroe. The "1st Edition" Jazz Band is one of the programs of the Museum’s adult education initiative. With performers ranging in age from 39 – 92, the band is entering its third season and has performed for warm audiences at various venues around the county. Carlos Alvarez, 13, currently plays piano and saxophone in San Marcos Middle School’s Wind and Jazz band. He started playing piano at age 9 at Joli Ann elementary school thanks to a music program funded by the Museum. Carlos has also been nominated to play at a district honor band and school district-wide competition. He also enjoys singing and playing the guitar. Jazz and funk guitarist Serena Geroe, 16, has been named "One of San Diego's most promising young talents" by the San Diego Union Tribune. In addition to leading her own trio, she performs with Gilbert Castellanos' Young Lions, Andy Geib's Ambassadors of Soul, and has participated in a variety of All State and honor bands. Serena is also a member of the jazz program and is a percussionist in the Samba Corvo drum line at Canyon Crest Academy, where she is a junior. Serena will be joined by Wesley Biasi (drums) and Wylen Winchell (bass).
