Daniel Barden was an “imaginative and outgoing” seven year-old member of Newtown soccer and swim teams who loved to read, ride the waves at the ocean, and spend time with his family, playing the drums in a band he’d formed with his older brother and sister, James and Natalie. With seeming wisdom and manners beyond his years, his mother, Jackie, recalled how “Our neighbors always said, ‘He’s like an old soul’” while his father, Mark, smiled at how “He would hold doors open for adults all the time.” Daniel, the “light of his family’s life,” dreamed of becoming a firefighter like his uncles, and in tribute to him and to his dream, more than one hundred firefighters from around the area stood at attention in dress uniform in an honor guard at his funeral, lining both sides of the street from the funeral home to the church from which he was buried, some playing “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes as the funeral procession passed by.
