From simple doodles to complex ink art, it all starts with a pen and a pad of paper. It is a way to start sketches of greater things to come, or for simple enjoyment when bored in a meeting or class. This is the theme of the event Thumbprint Gallery presents “Pen 2 Paper: A Pen Art Exhibiton” on Tuesday, August 27 at BASIC in Downtown. Gather artistic inspiration from thoughtfully crafted pen drawings at BASIC.
Gloria Muriel is an established local artist that has had her surreal works featured in the past. Her colorful paintings are consistently dreamy and have spiritual overtones. Intangible backdrops often feature mysterious, wide-eyed, young girls or vibrantly-colored birds. The paintings of Dali and other pop-surrealist illustrations have influenced her fantastical and immersive artworks. She has been featured at Thumbprint in the past show “Tangerines & Monster Dreams” with Michael “Monstrinho” Amorillo.
Another local artist is Eric Wixon and his chaotic imagery. He uses a mixed palette of light colored pinks and blues and brilliant greens to create grotesque faces that are mashed together. His paintings spill with colorful emotion with demonic grins and empty stares. He has moved to painting full time. He is constantly creating new works and is always popping up at events for living paintings.
Local artist Frank Wallz has been creating art ever since he was introduced to it at a young age. His doodling on school test papers eventually turned into a career of art influenced by graffiti artists, contemporary illustrators and printmakers. Illustrations and design are the core elements to his artistic creativity. Wallz’s recent works combine quotes and images to create a dynamic conversation.
The opening starts at 7p.m. and runs until 12 a.m. on Tuesday August 27. BASIC is located at 410 Tenth Avenue in downtown, San Diego. Other artists exhibiting will include Alli Bautista, EZ Rock, Dion Terry, Nick Simon, Rod Mojica and Victor Villa along with about 30 more artists. There will also be fashion and Jewelry pop-up shops by Frances Camaccion Jewelry. There is no dress code and no cover. However, you must be at least 21 years old to attend.
