Thursday Writers group

Every Thursday a group of writers meet at Lestat's (3343 Adams Ave) at 5 p.m. to produce and share creative work. The $5 drop-in workshop is hosted by writers Judy Reeves and Steve Montgomery, and sponsored by San Diego Writers, Ink.

"Each meeting follows the same format: we gather in a circle of cafe tables in the dimly lit performance venue, anywhere from 12 to 20 of us," Reeves told me. "We go around the circle and introduce ourselves by first name only, then the Guidelines for Writing practice are read by the leader."

What follows is 14-18 minutes of free-writing based on a prompt, and at the end of that time, participants may volunteer to present what they've written. "Not every one has to read and there's no critique on the writing . . . Because there's no critique or feedback on the writing, people feel more at ease taking chances," Reeves said.

"Lots of laughing goes on. Sometimes tears, too. Writers aren't afraid to go to the tender places. I think because Thursday Writers is a safe place to be. We celebrate successes, acknowledge special events in writers' lives and generally support one another and cheer each other on," Reeves said. Thursday Writers group is for writers of all levels and walks of life.

Chula Vista not boring

I had to play “Johnny B. Goode” five times in a row. I got knocked out with an upper-cut on stage for not playing Aerosmith.
