The Latest Sunset of the year, 8:01 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time in San Diego, occurs tonight — Wednesday, June 29 — approximately one week after the summer solstice (our longest day). From now until late July there will be little change in the time of sunset, even though the total length of daylight will steadily shorten.

I don't understand how this could be. How is it the sunrise is later, but the sunset is not earlier?

It's been a long, long time since I took an astronomy class, but what little I remember is that it has to do with the tilt of the earth on it's axis, the rotation of the earth and the distance the earth is from the sun this time of year. Also I think Latitude has something to do with it. For example, from personal experience, I know that sunset is alter in Seattle and earlier in Honolulu than in San Diego this time of year.
