Ocean Beach is a great place to learn to surf, particularly on a weekday, when the waves aren't too crowded.

On a recent Friday, Bijan - a distinguished visitor from Germany - signed up for a lesson, jumped into the water, and rode some waves for the first time. He managed to stand up several times, which isn't easy, as anyone who has tried surfing will tell you. And the smile on his face suggests that it won't be long before Bijan is on a board again.

Thanks to Cousin Jen for bringing Bijan all the way from Berlin for a visit - and for serving as OB in HD's first guest cameraperson. Cowabunga!

Wow, first human subject on camera for OB in HD! Indeed an honor! I agree, standing up on the board is very difficult--I've only made it for a few seconds. Another fun vid, Shizzy. Danke! :)

SDaniels, thanks for the love! Indeed, Bijan is our first human subject. Now that the ice has been broken, I think we'll do our best to get more OB people in front of the camera going forward.

And magicsfive, thanks for your shout, as well! Glad to hear you enjoyed this episode. Bijan and my Cousin Jen are actually back home in Berlin, but they seemed to have lots of fun out here, so I hope they'll be back before too long.

This was fantastic. It reminded me about my early days of being a beginner when every small mushy wave felt like a triumph. Where did Bijan take lessons? I love that they had him on the Indo board to practice. Perhaps I need a refresher course since my level of beginning has become a battle with frustration. It was great to be reminded of the very beginning and the fun of it all.

Right on, singleandawesome, I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it!

Bijan got his lessons from the surf shop at 4881 Newport Ave...if you watch closely at the very beginning of the vid, you'll see the place. I believe the lesson, in which he was one of 3 students, cost Bijan $90 and included 3 hours of instruction in the shop and on the water.
