I resist haikus in the same way I resist puzzles; a banana is easier to eat than an apple. ;-) Here is a blog contribution quoted from Jane Hirshfield's book Nine Gates: "The act of writing is a making, but also a following: of the mystery of source as it emerges into a form; of the wisdom of the heart-mind as it encounters the wisdom of language."

Hirshfield goes on to quote Yang Wan-li a Sung dynasy poet:

Now what is poetry? If you say it is simply a matter of words, I will say a good poet gets rid of words. If you say it is simply a matter of meaning, I will say a good poet gets rid of meaning. "But," you ask, "without words and without meaning, where is the poetry?" To this I reply, "get rid of words and get rid of meaning, and still there is poetry."

From Mac: tanka 1 |ˈtä ng kə| noun ( pl. same or -kas ) a Japanese poem consisting of five lines, the first and third of which have five syllables and the other seven, making 31 syllables in all and giving a complete picture of an event or mood. ORIGIN Japanese, from tan ‘short’ + ka ‘song.’

1 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 3

The digits in 10/10/10 add up to a trinity.

2 + 0 + 3 = 5

The digits in 2010/10/10 add up to 5.

3 + 5 = 8

3, 5, and 8 are consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ...) and the above equation is the effective computation of the sixth element of the sequence by addition of the fourth and fifth.

When it comes to Work I guess

Ask 'till they say Yes

Here's advice for you

Decide what you want to do

Now apply there too

What job's not a bore

Just what are you looking for

Think about it more

If you need money

It may sound kinda funny

Do something Sunny

Ask all that you know

To suggest where you should go

If it's weird say No

You are not alone

So spend more time on the phone

What skills should you hone

Here is a good rule

Consider going to school

Smart is a good tool

What about scary

Is that too hairy

Life is a tizzy

Now it's time to get busy

EXPLORING THE ONE-BREATH POEM: DISCOVERING YOUR HAIKU-MIND led by Billie Dee

Sunday, March 11, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.

Open Door Books 4761 Cass Street, San Diego 92109 (corner of Cass & Missouri) ~ 858-270-8642

http://haikusandiego.com

This will be an overview for those new to or curious about the haiku genre, as well as more experienced writers who would like to expand their perspectives and workshop poems-in-progress. We will concentrate on the elements of contemporary English Language Haiku, a form poorly understood by most people who were introduced to haiku in school. The introduction will be followed by a 45-minute interactive comment and critique session of participant poems. Please bring recent work if you wish to participate in this part of the workshop. The overall goal of this session is to cultivate the haiku-mind, one that seeks and captures those epiphanic moments of awareness that arise from our everyday lives.

An elevator to space is the way to go? A platform 1.5 km in the air, sending robots up and down from the platform on tethers is a far cry from the Kármán line. Oh, and by the way, the space elevator as proposed is for moving cargo into space, not people. The cargo would be for cargo transport to the people who are already up there and got there by, you know, rockets.
