A fifteen-year-old girl was home when two intruders went around to the back of the house in Carlsbad and kicked in the doggie door to gain entry. The terrified girl was already on the phone with her mother and screamed “They are in the house!” as she ran upstairs to her bedroom.
A prosecutor read a letter from the outraged mother which was addressed to the judge, before sentence was pronounced for two confessed burglars in a San Diego County Superior Courtroom yesterday afternoon, May 22, 2013.
The day of the burglary, almost a year ago, the frightened girl pushed the screen out of her bedroom window and then jumped from the roof to escape. She ran down the street to hide at her best friend’s home, while her mother contacted police.
Carlsbad police claim they were able to arrive on scene within five minutes of the 911 call, which they clocked at 9:33 on a Wednesday morning, June 20 2012. However, the homeowner stated the burglars were able to “ransack” every room of the house, including the bedroom from which the girl escaped, and made off with multiple computers and cash and jewelry and a wallet and more. Within one hour of arriving, Carlsbad cops were able to capture two suspects less than two miles from the home, on El Camino Real.
The mother told the judge in her letter that her daughter has changed, the now-16-year-old girl has become tearful and afraid. The mother worries that her daughter has lost her confidence and might not be able to go away to college now. She said the family has installed a new security system in their home on Yosemite Street.
The mother of the teen’s best friend, the homeowner where the frightened girl ran that day, stood to speak to the judge. She declared that the entire neighborhood is no longer at ease, and that the toll of the burglary is greater than just the items that were taken.
At the time of their arrests, 22-year-old Natalie Espinoza was on parole and 24-year-old Emmanuel Saucedo was on probation, according to a police statement. Natalie Espinoza had prior convictions for first degree burglary and a gang crime, and Emmanuel Saucedo for drug offenses.
Public defender Rick Crawford told the judge that Emmanuel Saucedo, now 25, suffers from “a serious drug addiction.” He said Saucedo has no prior convictions for crimes of violence, and that he committed the burglary attempting to provide for his four-year-old daughter. Attorney Crawford pointed out that the burglary victims suffered no actual “loss” since they had benefit of homeowner’s insurance.
Prosecutor Aimee McLeod said that Emmanuel Saucedo told officers that he has been dating his co-defendant Natalie Espinoza “exclusively” the last three years, and that they used alcohol and cocaine together on a daily basis.
Emmanuel Saucedo was sentenced to 4 years prison and Natalie Joanna Espinoza got 6 years and 8 months, by order of the Honorable Judge Aaron Katz yesterday afternoon, May 22, 2013.
