Knife-Attack Survivor Featured on TV Series

A San Diego County woman who survived a knife attack by her ex-boyfriend was featured last night on a television program titled “Who the (BLEEP) Did I Marry?”

The half-hour program was featured on the ID or Investigation Discovery channel at 9 p.m. Wednesday July 11. The series is described on its website as a showcase of women who have unknowingly “signed up for much more than a happy honeymoon” with liars and cheaters, “all told in shocking first-hand accounts.” Last night's program was described as a story about a boyfriend’s “obsessive character” which turned violent when his girlfriend wanted to separate but “he wasn’t willing to let that happen.”

Former San Marcos resident Kendra Beebe first described the happy beginning of her relationship with Shelley Malil. The first half of the show is a review of how Beebe met the Hollywood actor through an on-line dating service in July 2007 -- the viewer sees many happy snapshots of Kendra and Shelley, a handsome couple. Shelley Malil lived in Los Angeles and the two travelled to see each other. “Meeting Shelley was like a dream come true,” the perky blonde said. “I was really in love with him.”

Then the boyfriend’s growing criticism of her clothes is revealed, he found her dress too see-through or too revealing. Then we learn of his drinking. The unacceptable behavior culminated in a violent knife-attack on Kendra Beebe’s back patio, she was surprised there while sipping wine with a male friend. On that August night in 2008, Kendra Beebe was stabbed more than 20 times, both her lungs were punctured and she lost half her blood. “I experienced a miracle by living that night,” Kendra Beebe said.

Beebe’s friend David Maldonado and her next door neighbor Chuck Lee – who is widely credited with saving Kendra Beebe’s life by disarming the attacker and slowing down her blood loss – are also interviewed. The two men give eye-witness, first-person accounts of what they saw and did that night. Beebe’s mother and her attorney also add to the story.

After a trial in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse, Shelley Malil was convicted of assault and attempted murder and sentenced to 14 years to Life.

Kendra Beebe now runs her own insurance business from a home in Carlsbad. “I am not a victim, I am a survivor,” she said. She is not looking for a new romance just now, “It would take someone very special for me to ever be able to trust and open up again.”
