Metropolitan Opera HD Parsifal

Why won't my schedule let me see this monstrous tour de force from the Met?

I so wanted to go see the Metropolitan Opera HD broadcast of Parsifal on Saturday March 2nd. The performance is live from the Met and is shown in movie theaters across North America.

The show started at 9:00 am and I had Aida rehearsal at 1:00 pm. Plenty of time--right?

Wrong.

This Parsifal goes for five hours and forty-five minutes so I would’ve missed the last two and a half hours. The last act of Parsifal might be the most miraculous music ever penned so I didn’t go.

By all accounts this new Parsifal was out of this world. Big-voiced tenor Jonas Kaufmann was singing the title role. That in and of itself is worth the $25 price. The production is reported to be breathtaking.

There is an encore re-screening of all the Met HD movies and I had a thin hope that Parsifal’s would be in May when my schedule opens up a little. No such luck.

The encore is March 20th at 6:30 pm. The local theaters carrying it are Edwards Mira Mesa, Edwards San Marcos, and AMC La Jolla.

Will I go?

The first staging rehearsal for San Diego Opera’s Murder in the Cathedral is on Wednesday the 20th at 7:00 pm. I thought about calling in sick but SDO general director Ian Campbell is staging this one so I’ll be hale and healthy.
