Curator Bonnie Wright's excellent cutting edge concert series, Fresh Sound, continues on Feb. 13 with a sure to be searing performance by saxophonist Larry Ochs and drummer Donald Robinson.
For more than 30 years Ochs has been a key member of the Rova Saxophone Quartet, a groundbreaking free-jazz ensemble from the San Francisco Bay Area.
He has a volcanic improvisational aesthetic, with a wonderfully raspy, warbled vibrato that reminds me a lot of the late tenor saxophone titan Albert Ayler.
Robinson is a long-time collaborator who seems to be coming out of the tradition of folks like Sunny Murray and the great Rashied Ali. He creates waves of multidirectional rhythms and keeps a constant flow of kinetic energy in the air.
Together, these guys represent the zenith of free-improvisational communication. I've been listening a lot to their latest CD, and it's burning, all the way--if you are a fan of the epochal John Coltrane/ Rashied Ali album Interstellar Space, then you owe it to yourself to come and check these guys out--because their thing is very much in that spirit.
The Fresh Sound concert series is held at Space 4 Art, located at 325 15th, between J & K, in the East Village. Show begins at 8 pm, tickets are $15.
