San Diego Aida

Time to look at Aida with a disgusting tie in with *Twilight* and a sampling of The Smiths.

It’s time to get into Verdi’s Aida. The show opens on Saturday April 20th at 7:00 p.m. The venue is the Civic Theater.

As operas go, I think this one has a story that develops well. The love-triangle is between Radames--the Egyptian captain, Aida--the Ethiopian princess, and Amneris--the Egyptian princess.

Think of it this way: if Radames is Bella then Aida is Edward and Amneris is Jacob. We can join team Aida or team Amneris, both have merit.

I think I just threw-up in my mouth a little bit. Sorry about the Twilight reference.

This one might work better, we can be on team Achilles or team Hector, both have merit but we also have a touch of Romeo and Juliet in Aida.

The twist in this story is that Aida does betray her love in order to please and advance her father’s cause. Juliet would never betray Romeo to please her father.

Amneris is the reason Radames is condemned to death but it becomes clear that she did not intend for him to be killed.

When Radames is buried alive in a crypt, Aida comes out of the shadows where she was waiting to die with him.

As The Smiths once said,

“And if a double-decker bus

Crashes into us

To die by your side

Is such a heavenly way to die

And if a ten-ton truck

Kills the both of us

To die by your side

Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine “
