My bologna-o-meter went berserker last Thursday when a dude at Whistle Stop told me that, not only would the Blue Man Group be playing a secret show at the Tower Bar on Saturday, but they would be covering Nirvana Nevermind from front to back in celebration of the album's 20 year anniversary.

Believe it or not, it was mostly true.

“We practiced this set specifically for this show,” bald but not blue drummer Jeff Wright told me after the gig.

“We like to do these things for everyone who can’t make the Blue Man Group show, so we called around town and Mick (owner of the Tower Bar and Til Two Club) was the first to say OK.”

Of course, any jerk who’s spent twelve minutes practicing guitar can play “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” but this set, performed by three members of Blue Man Group’s backing band, was spot on, energetic, and oozing with teenage nostalgia.
