Bassist Leading New Jam Session At Turquoise Cafe

Bassist Benjamin Wanicur is looking to establish a regular Monday night jam session in Pacific Beach at the Turquoise Cafe, (873 Turquoise St.)

"Personally, I hope to use this session as a vehicle for playing some music that I ordinarily do not play on other people's gigs...besides that, I just want to provide a session that both the audience and musicians can enjoy," said the bassist.

It is a testament to Wanicur's musicianship that, "So far, we've had an amazing turnout. Daniel Jackson, Gilbert Castellanos, Joshua White, Rob Thorsen, Ian Tordella, Sharon DuBois, Brian Levy, Mikan Zlatcovich, Joseph Howell and many others have already come out to jam with us."

This is Wanicur's second residency in San Diego. He came here after undergraduate studies at William Patterson University, and played with many of the town's upper echelon of jazz musicians, before moving to San Francisco in 2006.

In the Bay area, Wanicur worked with pianist Mark Levine, saxophonist / educator Andrew Speight and legendary drummer Donald "Duck" Bailey.

Now, the bassist is back, hoping to learn how to surf and reestablish himself on the local jazz scene.

The house trio for the jam session also features two of San Diego's most promising young musicians: pianist Kris Korsgaden and drummer Fernando Gomez, players who have been making waves at Lestat's in Normal Heights, and Rebecca's in South Park.

Bring your instrument of choice and/or a friend, Mondays, 7:30 - 11:30 p.m.
