Drowning Men New/Old Full-Length & Tour with Airborne Toxic Event
The Drowning Men will be hitting the road next month, bringing their anthemic indie rock on a 23-date North American tour supporting previous tour mates the Airborne Toxic Event, plus some headlining shows along the way (dates below).
The Oceanside band is touring in support of its debut full-length, Beheading of the Song Bird, which was originally self-released in 2009, but will receive its first proper release to retail October 25 on Flogging Molly's L.A.-based Borstal Beat Records.
The full-length blends folk and roots Americana with sing-along sea shanties and pirate chants, with side forays into Eastern European ethnic folk delivered with the rhythmic complexity of a Brecht-Weill opera.
The Drowning Men are Nathan "Nato" Bardeen, James Smith, Todd Eisenkerch, Gabriel Messer, and Rory Dolan, five longtime San Diego friends who have grown up together and been in various bands with and without each other over the past 15 years, from fast punk to traditional Irish folk bands.
Their multi-instrumental, richly layered, sonic sound is evident on their self-released EP, Kill the Matador which features acoustic and electric guitar, electric bass, drums, synthesizer, mandolin, bouzouki, and fiddle.
“I love theatrical melodies and swells, and the purity of folk music from around the world”, explains Nato, the band’s main lyricist and songwriter, whose personal influences include Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and the bleak poetry of Nick Cave, whose novel And the Ass Saw the Angel inspired the band’s name.
