Springtime and first loves are nice, but what about Delilah?
Delilah, what a manipulative, nagging, opportunistic, whore. However, Samson was a jerk. These two needed a reality show. They could have been the original celebrity couple. Sam-lah.
After Samson falls in love with Delilah, the Philistines approach and offer her 1100 silver coins if she can reveal the source of Samson's strength.
She accepts and starts trying to pry the information out of Samson. He tells her if he's bound with fresh bow strings, he will lose his strength. She binds him with fresh bow strings while he sleeps. It doesn't work.
She continues to work on him and he tells her fresh rope will take his strength. She binds him with fresh rope while he sleeps. It doesn't work.
At this point, Samson needs to get out. If you're with a woman who has tried to strip you of your supernatural strength twice, why would you ever tell her the truth?
Of course, he does tell her the truth--because he's an idiot--and she cuts his hair. The Philistines show up, cut his eyes out and put him to work pushing a mill stone.
The Philistines have a feast to celebrate the demise of Samson. During the festivities, they bring Samson up to taunt him. They tie him to the support pillars of the temple and he pulls the house down and kills them all. Somehow God was involved in all of this. Hmmm. Okay?
Saint Saens wrote an opera Samson et Dalila. He messes with the biblical account and makes it more of a romance. The Saint Saens version makes both Samson and Dalila into characters that are acceptable to modern audiences. The biblical characters are grotesque but more interesting.
The music with which Dalila seduces Samson into revealing the source of his strength is Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix (moh cuh soov-rah tah vwah).
I, for one, am seduced. Especially with the clip of Shirley Verrett singing it from 1971. It's in black and white but this woman oozes sexual energy. Elena Obraztsova has the best vocals on this piece. There are some who think she sings it too powerfully.

Whew! Saw your headline and thought this was a story about me. ;)
Do you give hair cuts?
Obraztsova's version is too strident, not seductive enough. I keep thinking Azucena yes, Dalila, no.
Verrett's is almost too seductive. She loses a little pace in the middle section. But wow, great stage movement, great seductive attitude, great voice, great high note at the end, and she looks delicious in that dress.
You're take on Obraztsova is how a lot of folks feel. This aria isn't quite right for her but those bottom notes threaten to swallow up the entire audience!
Azucena for sure and Santuzza was a signature role for her.
AAAlways blame the women. Tiresome.
Oh Diana, I said Samson was a jerk and an idiot. What more do you want? I didn't have space to go into all the reasons why he was a jerk but if you read Judges, you'll find him to be completely out of his mind and something of a megalomaniac. Ah but he's God's megalomaniac.
I'm going to assume you're comment is only half serious. It is a biblical story for crying out loud. Who do you think wrote those books? Kate Chopin?
If not, I'm sorry for what might seem like a rough reply. I'm only a quarter serious. :-))
Don't worry I post purely for my own amusement. Your title was certainly provacative and I thought it deserved an equally provacative response. How was I. Was it good for you?
Samson was no different then many men who think with only their "Little Brain"
no wonder he got clipped ;-))
and spawned some mighty fine music
every man needs a "manipulative whore" in his life...hahahahahaha...even if it's only a once in a lifetime experience
and what woman doesn't want to run with scissors occasionally ;-S
Nan if you start wielding scissors, please make sure your webcam is on. You could get paid!
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....noice idea!! ;-D
