Mundell Lowe & Bob Boss: Dec. 9, North Park

The San Diego Center for the Arts is featuring a rare two guitar duo of Mundell Lowe and Bob Boss, Dec.9, at the Architecture venue, 3956 30th St., in North Park.

Lowe is a legendary figure in jazz history. He has played with Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Benny Goodman and Bill Evans, to name a few. He also spent 17 years as a staff guitarist in the NBC Orchestra, appearing on the original Today Show with host Dave Garroway.

His partner, guitarist Bob Boss, has an impressive resume himself: he's played and recorded with contrabass giant Bert Turetzky, who calls him a "bluesician" for his tastefully applied mastery of blues techniques, and he has gigged with internationally acclaimed saxophonists Eddie Harris and Richie Cole, as well as pianist Mike Wofford, and bassist Marshall Hawkins.

Lowe is a master of bebop and straightahead jazz, and even though he's in his '80s, he cant still lay it down on the guitar. Rapid fire strikes along the fretboard alternate with knotty slices of chord -melody, and the man knows how to play a ballad.

Expect plenty of give and take, frequent fireworks, and smoky, pensive explorations of the Great American Songbook. Toss in some blues connotation for good measure, and you've got the complete jazz experience.

Architecture is a small venue, with excellent sound. Seating is limited, so reservations are encouraged. Tickets are $15.
