Campaign Tactics
November 2, 2008 For Immediate Release Neighborhood Activists React To Deceptive Campaign Tactics San Diego, CA – Residents of San Diego City Council District 3 are upset over last minute deceptive campaign tactics. In one District 3 mailer, some donors were wrongly described as special interests or developers, according to grassroots community leaders. One civic activist, Ian Trowbridge, has filed a complaint with the state Fair Political Practices Commission with regard to the mailer sent out by the San Diego Voter Education Project to aid candidate Todd Gloria.
Several of the neighborhood grassroots organization leaders who were characterized in the anti-Whitburn mailer as special interest donors are gathering on Monday, November 3 at 1:30 PM at the site of the 301 University project, at the corner of 4th Avenue and University Avenue in Hillcrest.
Tom Mullaney, of Friends of San Diego, who led the successful fight against the 301 University project will speak about his reaction to District 3 negative campaigning. David Potter, a respected environmental, land use and planning consultant who provided consulting services to the residents of Kensington in their effort to downsize the Kensington Terrace project, will also be in attendance, as will Roxanne Govari, who is currently leading the effort in her community against the expansion of the Academy of Our Lady of Peace. Attorney Barry Hager, who was instrumental in the effort to scale back the Mission Hills Paseo development, and who helped lead the campaign to create the Mission Hills Historic District, as well as get the Uptown Interim Height Ordinance passed, will also speak about his reaction to being characterized as a special interest donor.
