Kylie Minogue’s got one. So does Ludacris and 50 Cent. Even the folks at American Idol have set one up. I’m talking about a social networking site – that’s right. Now, in addition to your Myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn.com., and all the other sites you already belong to, now you need to join your favorite musician’s site as well.
According to a recent Billboard story at Reuters, "50 Cent has more than 1 million friends on MySpace, but if the rapper ever decides to leave the social network, he'll be leaving behind those friends, too. So like a growing number of artists, he's started his own social networking site."
Thisis50.com is the new social networking site where fan’s of 50 Cent set up profile pages and add friends, just like they would on the other major social networking sites.
So who has time for yet another social networking site? Well, apparently it’s the place where true fans of the artist like to get together online, download the latest music, ringtones and purchase pretty much anything that has to do with the artist. The new social networking sites are quickly turning into a viable business opportunity and new revenue stream for musicians.
In fact, according to my sources, on Kylie Minogue's site KylieKonnect, nearly 25 percent of users have made a ringtone, music download or merchandise purchase.
Are you a member of your favorite band’s web site? Are there already too many social networking sites out there to keep up with? Are you a band who’s got a web site to share? I’d like to hear about it. Post your comments about this latest tech trend in the music industry. I look forward to your comments!
