Santa Fe Christian hangs on to beat Palo Verde Valley

SOLANA BEACH – Typically disciplined and focused on fundamentals, Santa Fe Christian was off their game late against Palo Verde Valley on Saturday – and it almost cost them. The Eagles held off a furious Yellowjackets comeback for a 27-21 victory.

“We were actually pretty lucky right now,” said Santa Fe Christian running back Austin Knoth. “We got outplayed in the second half.”

Thirteen seconds into the second half, Knoth ran for a 47-yard touchdown to put the Eagles ahead 27-6. At that point it looked like Santa Fe Christian (4-2) would win going away, but behind a strong running game Palo Verde Valley had other ideas.

“They played good but we didn’t,” Knoth said.

Midway through the third quarter, the Yellowjackets cut into the lead with a Robert Shupe 16-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Hill and two-point conversion. After an Eagles punt, Palo Verde Valley (3-2) struck again with a 30-yard Shupe to Hill touchdown to make it a one-score game early in the fourth quarter.

The Yellowjackets got the ball back after a Santa Fe Christian punt. But after a bad snap put Palo Verde Valley in a hole, they turned the ball over on downs and the Eagles were able to run the final four minutes off the clock.

“We’re still strong as a team,” Knoth said. “We just never give up.”

Santa Fe Christian built their lead with big plays in the first quarter. On the first play from scrimmage, Eagles linebacker Louie Dedonates recovered a Palo Verde Valley fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

Later in the quarter Eagles quarterback Connor Moore connected with receiver Barrett Floyd on a 74-yard touchdown pass to put the hosts ahead 13-0. Both teams traded scores to give Santa Fe Christian a 20-6 lead at the half.

“There wasn’t a lack of focus or leadership,” Knoth said. “It’s just ball security. If we held the ball we would have won that game by way way way more.”

With Coastal League play on tap, Santa Fe Christian begins their league season in the middle of the pack. The Eagles aren’t worried about that, however, as their losses have come to unbeatens Helix and Grossmont.

“We’re just confident. Definitely not cocky, but we’re not afraid of anyone,” Knoth said. “These kids were bigger than us, Helix was bigger, Grossmont was bigger, but we’re not afraid of anyone.”
