Chalk up a victory for the tiny town of Potrero in East County. Blackwater Worldwide, the controversial mercenary firm, wrote a letter to the county today (March 7), saying it is withdrawing its application for the 824-acre facility, which was strongly opposed by most people in the town. Earlier, the community had voted to remove planning group members who had voted for Blackwater at sparsely-attended meetings. As revealed in the Reader in early 2007, the county was getting ready to push the Blackwater proposal through on a fast track, but the citizen rebellion apparently ended that.

Response to post #1: We could all take lessons from the residents of this hamlet in far East County, near the Mexican border. The residents, upon realizing how the county and Potrero community planners had been working for months for this facility, organized quickly and effectively. The residents were helped by a raft of bad publicity about Blackwater, and a best-selling book outlining the company's depredations. The county had put the project on a fast track before the residents even knew about it. The protesters knew that even if they won the fight to oust the community planners supporting Blackwater, they would fight an uphill battle against the county. But they rolled up their sleeves and got it done. Another environmental disaster has been averted. Best, Don Bauder
