San Ysidro junior guard Javion Waston
SAN YSIDRO – San Ysidro junior guard Javion Watson verbally committed to play basketball at Long Beach State on Tuesday, according to Cougars head coach Terry Tucker. The 6’2” guard was named South Bay League Player of the Year and First Team All-CIF in 2010-11.
Watson averaged 19 points and five assists for a San Ysidro team that finished 21-9 and lost to Rancho Buena Vista in overtime in the Division I quarterfinals. Tucker said Long Beach State head coach Dan Monson watched Watson work out at the San Ysidro High gym and immediately gave him an offer.
“Our principal Hector Espinoza meets us at the front gate every morning and tells us to believe in ourselves and chase our dreams,” Watson said. “Now I get to realize my dream of attending college.”
Watson had also received interest from San Diego State, USD, California, UC Irvine and Marquette. Tucker said he picked the 49ers because of location, where the program is headed and the opportunity to play as a freshman.
Long Beach State finished 22-12 last season and won the Big West regular season title. Recent San Diego players currently in the Big West include Thomas Jacobs (Scripps Ranch/Cal State Northridge), Troy Leaf (Foothills Christian/UCSB), and Maliik Love (Bishop’s/Cal Poly).
