The 9th ranked Aztecs from Orange County will be making the trip to Spring Valley this week in what should be a hard hitting heavy weight bout at Matador Stadium. This is Coach Karlo’s home opener of the year and in addition to that the Matadors will be playing a game on the schools new turf field.
Last week the Matadors lost in Utah but played very well in that effort. This week’s opponent does not get any easier for Mt. Miguel as Anaheim-Esperanza are the defending co-league champs and had a JV team that went 9-0 last year as rumor has it. The one X-factor belongs to the home team in a running back by the name of Derall Hunter who scored 24 of the Matadors 34 points last week giving him 7 touchdowns already on the year making him the leading scorer in East County.
Lot’s of credit to Coach Tom Karlo and the fantastic job at scheduling very difficult opponents in the preseason. He is laying down a foundation of high level football in that program and where it really starts to show is in league and the maybe the playoffs this year. Although Karlo’s kids will be in the playoffs this year the Aztecs will have to much defense to get the Matadors going. A couple key injuries last week swings in the favor of the Aztecs who steal the thunder of opening night.
Prediction (Anaheim-Esperanza 20 – Mount Miguel 17)
