Almost a quarter of the way through the 2008 season and Helix is already at one loss? That’s correct folks, Mira Mesa pulled off the upset 2 weeks ago. Helix is the real deal though and if anything the loss to Mira Mesa only made the Scotties better. Helix had never beaten Carlsbad and they handled them with ease last Friday night. This week though the Scotties can expect a much tougher and more prepared opponent as the Otay Ranch Mustangs come into the Dog House of Helix on Friday night to square off.
The Mustangs are undefeated so far this year behind 2nd year Coach Brad Burton who is no stranger to Helix or East County Football. Brad, a former West Hills High defensive coordinator in the 90’s, has joined forces with his brother Mitch Burton who coaches the Mustangs offense. Coach Mitch Burton is the former Granite Hills head coach and knows what it takes to beat Helix at home. In 1995 Mitch took his Granite Hills Eagles up to Helix and knocked off the Scotties behind Senior Quarterback Shane Corey’s 3 touchdown passes, the last one in the final 2 minutes. Believe me when I say the Mustangs are prepared this week and it should be a heck of a game.
On paper Helix has the edge no doubt, but it won’t be easy for the Scotties by any means. The Helix offense had its way against Carlsbad, scoring on five of its first seven possessions and defeating the Lancers 35-14. Look for the same type of strategy this week for Helix as they will lean on their offensive stars to score on the stingy Mustangs defense. Behind the Burtons the Mustangs will be in this game late no doubt if they can control the ball and keep Helix’s offense off the field.
Helix will be to much this week though for the Mustangs to handle for a full 4 quarters.
Prediction (Helix 24 – Otay Ranch 14)
