East County Football Preview

East County Football Preview –9/19/08

Alright week #3 is here and our East County schools have some interesting match ups tonight as some of the Grossmont League schools will schools are favored heavily and some will be tested by some of the sections best programs. Overall the Grossmont league schools have 10 wins and 10 losses in the preseason but this week looks good on paper in the WIN column.

East County Game of the Week

Grossmont (1-1) at Steele Canyon (1-1)

It’s very hard to say what team has the edge here as it is very early in the season with both clubs at 1-1. The Cougars were smashed by section power house Cathedral Catholic 48-7 in week one, but then answered back against West Hills last week with a shut out victory 27-0 and are looking to improve to 2-1 on the year. First year Grossmont Coach Ron Murphy is only 3 points away from being undefeated as they lost to Otay Ranch 21-19 in week one, but then took care of business against Montgomery last week 34-6. Quarterback Tyler Mutter of the Foothillers has completed 52% of his passes and thrown for 3 touchdowns in the first two weeks and looks very solid as the field general this year and he is only a junior. Prediction – (Grossmont 26 – Steele Canyon 21)

El Centro Southwest (0-2) at El Cajon Valley (2-0)

The Braves have looked quite impressive so far in the preseason and you can expect much of the same tonight against the Eagles at home. El Cajon is anchored by senior Gerald Kendall with 4 TD’s, Alex Hann with 4 TD’s, and Anthony Jackson with 3 TD’s. Braves win by a few scores and stay undefeated. Prediction - (El Cajon Valley 49 – El Centro 7)

Mount Miguel (2-0) at American Fork (Utah) (2-2)

The Matadors travel to Utah this week for a rare out of state game against American Fork High School. Don’t be too surprised when the Matadors return to California still undefeated at 3-0 because the Matadors can pull the upset. The travel team cannot hang on this the win this week as the journey was too much Mt. Miguel. Prediction – (American Fork 28 – Mt. Miguel 27)

Helix (1-1) at Carlsbad (1-1)

Helix High is the power house representing the East County who will take on the Carlsbad Lancers at El Camino High School in North County tonight. Both teams are in desperate need of a win after both ball clubs lost last week. Helix has to be the favorite in this one though as Carlsbad lost 31 seniors to graduation last year. Look for Helix Coach Troy Starr to get Stanford bound Levine Toilolo involved in the offense more this week. Prediction – (Helix 28 – Carlsbad 14)

Point Loma (1-1) at El Capitan (1-1)

Is El Capitan’s Offense out of Gas? Absolutely not! Rust threw for over 30 TDs and 3,000 yards last year and he is just heating up here early on. Point Loma’s defense was scorched by Cathedral Catholic last week and I expect much of the same Swiss cheese defense this week from the Pointers. El Cap outlasts Pt. Loma in Lakeside. Prediction (El Capitan 31 – Point Loma 28)

Santa Fe Christian (1-1) at Monte Vista (0-1)

Most would probably predict a Santa Fe Christian blow out here, but league play is where the Monarchs seem to struggle because they are only 2-12 over the past three seasons. Coach Page Culver is going into his sixth year has the Monarchs coach and has his squad poised and ready for to pull off the upset special of the week. Prediction (Monte Vista 32 – Santa Fe Christian 28)

Scripps Ranch (0-1) at West Hills (0-2)

If the Wolf Pack can get keep the ball longer than the Falcons can they have a shot in the second half. The Pack has the kicking game to stay close, but it won’t be this week. Falcons are to strong this week behind Blue Chip QB Forcier--one of the Sections best.
Prediction (Scripps Ranch 42 – West Hills 14)

Valhalla (1-0) at Montgomery (0-2)

The Valhalla Norsemen opened up this season with a bye and took care of Mater Dei Catholic 33-10 in the season opener last Friday. Quarterback Pete Thomas starting his second year behind Coach Sutton’s new offense went a confident 16-23 for 241 Yards and 3 touchdowns. Valhalla remains unbeaten. Prediction (Valhalla 35 – Montgomery 13)

Santana (1-1) at Imperial Valley (1-0)

The Sultans of Santee will travel two hours to the desert and home of Imperial Valley High School tonight for a showdown with the Tigers. Caleb Hogue will carry the load for the Tigers who will enjoy there second home game in a row. Santana has been the tale of two teams as they tossed up 40 plus points in the opener, but were only able to muster up 14 last week against Christian High. Sultans Win in the desert. Prediction (Santana 28 – Imperial Valley 21)
