Helix try’s to avoid back to back losses

Look for the Helix Highlanders to raise the intensity this week as two of the sections best collide this week in a big time match up. Helix High is the power house representing the East County who will take on the Carlsbad Lancers at El Camino High School in North County tomorrow night.

Carlsbad beat Helix last year 14-10 in La Mesa so expect the Scotties to have a bad taste in their mouth from that one. Not to mention Helix lost a close one last week to Mira Mesa in a game the Highlanders would love to have back. Helix committed several turnovers that prevented the offense from building any solid momentum on the road. Helix was not the better team last week in a game they should have won, but you can expect that they were back to some basics this week at practice in La Mesa.

As for Carlsbad they surrendered 279 yards of rushing last week to La Costa Canyon and by half time the game was out of reach and it was already 38-0 in favor of La Costa Canyon. The Lancers are 1-1 after two weeks and running back Barbour rushed for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass, and broke up three passes on defense, including one he intercepted, as the Lancers held off Saint Augustine 26-19 in a game that was not close until the final seconds. Carlsbad coach Bob McAllister said that Barbour already has offers from Navy and Air Force and plenty of other schools are starting to take a look.

Both teams are in desperate need of a win after both ball clubs lost last week. Helix has to be the favorite in this one though as Carlsbad lost 31 seniors to graduation last year. Look for Coach Troy Starr to get Stanford bound Levine Toilolo involved in the offense this week. Toilolo was virtually non-existent last week versus the smaller corners of Mira Mesa and that has to be lingering on Coach Starr’s mind all week, so expect to see Toilolo in the end zone a couple times tomorrow night. The Highlanders defense which returns 8 starters from last year will be to tuff for Carlsbad’s offense this week and look for one or two defensive scores from the Helix defense tomorrow night.

-Prediction (Helix 28 – Carlsbad 14)
