Southbay School Otay Ranch will travel to El Cajon Valley of East County tomorrow night which should be a game that comes down to being decided by what school has a better defense this night. The defense of the Braves will have a tough task shutting down the balanced attack of the Mustangs who have a couple game changers in the lineup. On the other side of the ball El Cajon Valley’s offense is coming off a game where they passed for 362 yards and a senior receiver with 11 receptions while Otay’s defense got a bruising from Cathedral Catholic.
On paper you would have to give the edge to the Mustangs who definitely have more depth on the roster than the Braves. They definitely have more size. Many of the Braves players will go both ways plus be on all special teams for the entire game and which by the way they have been very successful at it by having a 4-1 record so far this year. It will take everything and maybe a little more to knock off Otay Ranch but the Braves have the skill players and the defense to keep them in the game and pull off the upset.
Last week the Mustangs never really had a chance against Cathedral as they put the game out of reach early by scoring early on Otay. The Braves on the other hand put themselves out of the game by committing costly turnovers early in the game. The winner of this rumble not only has to have the best defensive effort of the night, but also have the fewest mistakes and turnovers of both teams. The Braves have been in a similar position last year when heavily favored El Capitan attempted to sneak by ECV at El Cajon Valley Stadium, but the Braves were able to make a statement and sent the Vaqueros back to Lakeside with a loss.
Prediction – The Braves believe they have a talent to get to the playoffs and definitely be league champions of the North and the entire program has bought into the goal. El Cajon Valley gets the upset special of the week by beating Otay Ranch 28-21 at home.
