Mount Miguel gets ready for a East County Football - Backyard Brawl

Because of the close proximity of WVU and PITT University that rivalry between the two schools has been dubbed the Backyard Brawl. Talk about some entertaining football games when these two schools square off. Especially since there located in the middle of football country and only 40 miles or so separate these two schools.

Well San Diego and more importantly East County Football has an intriguing match up this week that I’m going to dub the East County Football Blog “Backyard Brawl Game of the Week.” The closer we get to League the more we’ll get to see some of East County’s best take it to each other and compete for a League Championship, but its Mount Miguel versus Bonita Vista this week in the inaugural East County Backyard Brawl Game of the Week.

It may be surprising to some but only 13 minutes and 8.79 miles separate these two campuses and football programs who will put on a heavyweight bout Friday night at Southwestern College under the lights. Bonita Vista come into this game undefeated after defeating Hilo Kamehameha, Mission Bay, and Castle Park. The rushing attack as been the staple for the offense thus far this season but look for the Barons to go to the air a little more this week against the Matadors.

Coach Tom Karlo must have had the goal of becoming Coach of the Year in 2008 when he was putting together this year’s schedule for Mount Miguel. If Mt. Miguel could have pulled off a couple big wins against the high caliber teams they set on the schedule, I bet you he would be Coach of the Year when it is all said and done. Mount Miguel has already traveled to Utah and just couldn’t hang on for a victory there against a very good team. In addition last week Mount Miguel scheduled Anaheim-Esperanza which is a ranked team in Orange County who came to Spring Valley and pushed around the Matadors for a few quarters.

My intuition is Coach Karlo is not worried about preseason records. He has a vested interest in getting the Matadors ready for league championship style football and the CIF playoffs. When you take on some of the opponents that Mount Miguel has taken on you really start to respect a more difficult schedule and what it really takes to compete against high level programs week in and week out. And Coach Karlo knows if he wants to have a shot at a League Championship this year it is going through the front office of Helix in La Mesa, so his Matadores must be prepared when that game comes. My hunch is that they will!

The Barons riding the momentum of the defeated train while Mount Miguel is still a little banged up. I really love the job Coach Karlo has done with his program and every part of me wants the Matadors to pull off the upset on Friday, but Bonita Vista will sneak away with a victory against the Matadors in the East County Football Blog “Backyard Brawl Game of the Week”!

Prediction (Bonita Vista 27 – Mount Miguel 14)
