The Monte Vista Monarchs will get the next shot at the El Cajon Valley “undefeated Braves” Friday night in Spring Valley as Monte Vista will look to hand El Cajon its first loss of the season. When these two teams squared up a year ago it shaped up to be a dog fight in a game that came down to the last possession. Monte Vista was able to hold on in the end and head back to Spring Valley with a road victory over the Braves.
Last year El Cajon Valley’s Quarterback Issac Soliz was a junior the last time he faced Monte Vista and went an inspiring 22-36 for 267 yards and a couple scores. The only variable that could be different this year is 12 of his completions in that game went to senior wide receivers who have graduated and both are playing at the next level. As a junior last year Peter Alkass hauled in 5 receptions for 72 yards and a score, so look for this senior to be a factor with fellow senior Soliz again this Friday night.
With Monte Vista’s Quarterback out for a few weeks the Monarchs chose to grind out the ball game last week against Grossmont with their two star running backs Nick Williams and Jarrod Scott. Both of these backs have some great moves when they get into the open field and Williams has the speed to never be caught once he breaks free into the secondary. Look for Monte Vista to expose these two young men with the ball a lot on offense and in the return game as well. Nick Williams knows exactly what to do against the Braves since he roasted them last year for 150 yards on 20 carries plus 3 touchdowns. Yikes!
El Cajon Valley’s tailback Gerald Kendall is no stranger to the 100 yard barrier as he surpassed that mark last year against the Monarchs rushing for 120 yards on just 14 carries. Coach Dan Goodrich for El Cajon will be giving this senior plenty of opportunities on Friday night to break this game wide open. The Braves are averaging 46.2 points per game this year getting help from a variety of players and on both sides of the ball. Alex Hann is becoming a popular name around East County Football lately as this QB/LB has scored a total of 5 touchdowns from both rushing and on defense with interception returns.
El Cajon Valley has not had any close games this year and really hasn’t been in any pressure situations thus far so it will be interesting to see if the Braves can continue to elevate their game this week and stay undefeated. Monte Vista can certainly win this ball game if they can keep the ball out of the Braves offense long enough and put some points up on the board. I’m going with the "Unbelievable Braves Show" again this week beating the Monarchs on the road.
