This whole Letterman/Palin thing is bizarre (hey, that would make a could bumper sticker...like it's a future ticket)

I thought Lettermans jokes weren't all that funny, but they worked. One of them was when Palin was in New York at a Yankees game. He said that during the 7th inning stretch, her daughter got knocked up by A-Rod.

He had a few other jokes the next day, but I can't remember what they were.

The first thing I found odd, was that Letterman addressed this in a very flip manner. He either should've apologized or not brought it up at all, and moved on.

I've heard a bunch of talk shows get it wrong, when they said Letterman "apologized" because he didn't. What he did was try to justify his jokes. And, there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe he felt he didn't owe her an apology. But if he wanted to justify them, I think he could've done a better job.

He could've said that the jokes weren't intended to imply that the 14-year-old daughter would get pregnant, but the 18-year-old, who did have a baby out of wedlock.

And don't tell me kids are off limits. I agree, they should be. But when Palin goes around using her kids for political reasons (even if it is just the one kid), well...welcome to politics.

And all the talk show hosts that are screaming "If we said that about Obamas kids, we'd be fired." That's insane. When Democrats say mean things, Republicans bring it up. And vice versa.

A few talk shows said that Letterman shouldn't get political and take sides. I've watched him for years, and he doesn't get on a soap box very often. To me, when someone does that, it's usually not "funny". It just becomes them ranting. Rosie O'Donnell, Garofallo, Margaret Cho, and a few others have gone down this path. They all went from being funny, to just being annoying. And I agree with most of their politics!

I can listen to Al Franken and Dennis Miller talk politics, and mix humor in. Everyone else (The View women, Glenn Beck, Rush...) they're horrible at it. It baffles me that they get such great ratings.

Now, back to Dave.

For Palin to write on her website that Letterman joked about a child being raped, was out of line. Letterman never used the word "rape". Now, if she's implying that her 14-year-old daughter getting pregnant from an older baseball player would be "statutory rape", then she should've said that.

And if Letterman didn't want to apologize, instead of him just repeating his jokes again, with the idiotic crowd laughing like they've never heard anything funnier...why not use those few minutes to do both...apologize and attack Palin, all in one fell swoop.

He could've said he regrets making the jokes, as the girl is a bit young, and the idea that she might hear those jokes or have friends at school talk about it, just wasn't a cool move.

But if Palin is going to preach abstinence, and her daughters are going to keep getting pregnant before they're married...I'm going to keep joking about it.

It might not have been the nicest thing for Letterman to say, but at least he'd be saying what's really on his mind; instead he just waited 10 minutes of air time on nothing.

On a side note: He's really got to stop that dumb move of running across the stage before the show starts. It's so unnecessary on so many levels.
