Goodell Shuts Door on NFL Teams Moving
Perhaps the controversy over whether or not the Chargers will move is over, but to say that no NFL teams can move is a stretch. As surfpuppy619 said, Al Davis proved the NFL doesn't have the leagal authority to stop a team. And just one day after Goodell made the statement you quoted, he said this, in regards to the situation in St. Louis: “We want to keep our franchises where they are so we’d love to have the St. Louis Rams stay in St. Louis. If issues come to a head, it’s possible that the Rams could move out of St. Louis entirely, but Goodell said he hopes it doesn’t come to that." Doesn't sound quite so omnipotent, does it. BTW, the owner of the Rams, Stan Kroenke, is a bidder for the Dodgers. He spends most of his time in Denver and is said to be good friends with Philip Anschutz. And according to what I've read, the Rams can break their lease in St. Louis in 2 years without any penalty and move for the 2015 season. Part of their lease terms require the dome to meet "first-tier" requirements — in other words, be considered among the top-quarter of the stadiums in the league. If not, the Rams could be free to relocate after the 2014 season. Even Goodell himself said that was "articulated very clearly in the lease". Seems to me that Goodell is acknowledging he can't control as much as he says he can. The St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission made a proposal and the Rams have until March 1 to accept or reject the offer. So I guess we'll find out by then if Goodell has all the power he says he has. Since Frank McCourt has until April 1 to decide who he sells the Dodgers to,the next 2 1/2 months could prove to be very interesting, and not just for those of use in L.A. Should Stan Kroenke get the Dodgers AND come to some arrangement with Philip Anschutz for the Rams to play in his stadium, I suspect that would affect the Chargers. They would see the door hasn't closed for moving, and since the NFL wants 2 teams in LA, they once again could hold San Diego hostage by using the old LA move as leverage. Not saying it will happen, but it's not out of the real of possibility. You know what they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same.— February 5, 2012 11:53 a.m.
Buyouts Didn’t Help U-T and Petco
Some things working against Elizabeth Warren. She would be 67 by the time of the 2016 election, making her the 2nd oldest POTUS, after Reagan. Of course that means a 2020 run would make her 71 and imho, we don't ever elect anyone that old. She's divorced. The only other divorced POTUS was Reagan. She's a Methodist. The only other Methodist in the last 100 yrs was GWB. She is a former Republican. The only other POTUS that I can recall from the last 100 yrs that switched parties and was later elected President was Reagan. And while she has some governmental experience, it's not what I would call significant and to me, being Chairperson of the Congressional Oversight Panel isn't much in the way of a leadership role. Should she win the Mass Senate seat, that would be good for her resume, but is 3 years enough time to gain the visibility and experience needed for a run for POTUS. And yes I know that Obama did the same thing, albeit a stint in the Illinois state senate. But as someone who did vote for him, I have been disappointed thus far and once again find my self in the position of possibly having to vote for the least of 2 evils.— February 5, 2012 11:10 a.m.
Back to My Groupie Days...
surfpuppy619, I won't argue with you whether or not you heard NYD. That said, let me point out a couple of things. As you noted, NYD made it's debut on the pre War tour on 1 December 1982. That was after the series of shows in which they opened for JGiles. The preWar tour was strctly European dates; U2 didn't hit the states until the middle of the War tour in 198. We saw them at the US Festival which I believe was the opening show for the western portion of the US tour. According to what I just read, the next show after the US Festival was 6-1-83 at the Civic in SFO. I'm thinking maybe that's when you heard NYD because it had been out for months, ans also because hadn't been performed yet when they played in 1982 with JGiles. Their 2 "biggest" songs out before the War tour were probably Gloria and Fire, at least imho. BTW, according to wiki, "I Will Follow" is the only song that U2 has performed on every tour since their first album and is the most frequently performed song with over 800 performances.— February 2, 2012 11:16 a.m.
Chris Leyva & Black Cherry
Jay Allen Sanford, completely off topic, but I just thought of this. We were over in Scottsdale last week for the auction and ran into Peter Tork. Any old Monkees stories that you can share?— February 2, 2012 6:29 a.m.
Back to My Groupie Days...
Surpuppy619, it was 1982. We saw JGiles and U2 at the LA Sports Arena and I believe they played the Civic a couple of days later. Took me a while to find it, but the stub is Sat.3-27-82. I think they had just played the SD sports arena the night before. I don't remember if NYD was a hit for U2 at the time, though. I had to double check this, but it wasn't released as a single until New Year's Day 1983. We're both huge U2 fans and they may have played some songs that ended up on War, but the album wasn't out at the time. October had just come out a couple of months before. I don't think they really started playing much off of War until later in the year. That was their first tour as a headliner and we saw then when they played the LA sports Arena again June of '83.— February 2, 2012 6:18 a.m.

San Diego Convention Center liars
Don Bauder, I am fine with the numbers I have seen and it's really not such a big deal to me. But if you have doubts about the veracity of the published numbers, please feel free to follow up. As far as a $500 million expenditure to expand the the convention center, well like you I don't reside in SD, so it really doesn't matter to me. I'm not trying to engage in a debate about who should spend how much to expand whatever to keep whomever from leaving. My intent was much simpler: to point out that there have been two recent conventions that have not suffered from declining attendance. Nothing more, nothing less. As for your bigger question, as I said, I don't reside in SD, so it doesn't matter to me. And as history has already show, voters do some pretty dumb things on occasion, so nothing would surprise me, especially in San Diego.— January 25, 2012 9:29 a.m.
San Diego Convention Center liars
Don Bauder "Our oldest son, who has been with Apple about 20 years, used to go to CES" As noted in the comment below, there are Apple employees who attend, as there are employees of many other companies as well. However, unless I am mistaken, you were referring to Apple and Microsoft as a corporate presence, as vendors, so to speak. As far as things "booming", I didn't imply, or intend to imply any such thing. You wrote the convention industry is vastly overbuilt and attendance is declining and I was merely pointing that in this one particular case, not so much. This year was the first time I did not attend in many years, so I can't speak from personal knowledge. However, several friends who did attend have all said it was a pretty busy place. In reference to the comment below, I looked at a few resources this morning. They all say pretty much the same thing. Attendance was up about 2% from last year and it was also higher than 2006, which was the previously the highest attended show, which was what I said in my previous post. The 2012 CES was the largest in it's history, with a record numbers of attendees, exhibitors and show floor space. I can't speak for the overall convention industry, as Comic con is the only one I've ever attended besides CES, so overall attendance may well indeed be declining. But again, as I said, for this one, this year, apparently not so much. We will have to wait and see how much, if any, Microsoft's departure has on future events. As for Comic con, what was the attendance at comic con this year? I read a press release recently that they signed a new lease with the SDCC keeping Comic-Con in San Diego through 2015. According to their release, they have maxed out their self imposed 125k attendance cap every year since 2007.— January 24, 2012 8:03 a.m.
San Diego Convention Center liars
Don Bauder Apple isn't "dropping out" of CES. I can't remember Apple having a presence at CES for at least 15 yrs, which was when I first attended, and I have had old timers tell me they don't recall Apple ever being there. The Macworld Expo was held in San Fran around the same time, sometimes AT the same time, until a couple of yrs ago and they haven't even been there since 2009. Steve Jobs started giving the keynote speech at Macworld his first year back as interim CEO. Apple doesn't do trade shows. When they have new products to reveal, they stage their own events as we have all seen in the last few yrs. BTW, according to an article I read last week in TWICE The 2012 CES was the largest in it's history, with a record numbers of attendees, exhibitors and show floor space. So maybe not so much with the declining attendance on this one.— January 23, 2012 10:37 a.m.
Candye Kane Battling Cancer Again
The first time we ever saw Candye was at Dick's in probably '94 or '95. Amazing voice. We've been fans ever since. We were supposed to go to the La Quinta Blues and Brews festival, before Thanksgiving, where she was playing but an ilness kept us home. I hope she makes a complete recovery.— January 20, 2012 9:30 a.m.
