Lawyer Steigerwalt Suspended a Year
Isn't Spital still practicing? I know that he still was a couple of years ago. I remember reading an article a few yrs ago about his filing of an application for a permanent disability retirement from San Diego County for some kind of injury he claimed to have suffered while he was working in the probation dept. Something about a fall while at work or something like that. At that time he was still practicing. I recall that he filed BK after the malpractice lawsuit, but that he paid off all of his creditors. We used to see his tv ads when we were down in SD. “Let Sam Do It!”. My favorite was the " client" in the wheel chair who, as it turns out, was actually a friend of his wife. Whatever happened with the lawyer who represented the former client who sued Spital. i remember that he and a couple of judges were convicted in a corruption case; I think the actual charges were racketeering and mail fraud. And then one of the judge, the one who wanted to serve the last part of his sentence at his ocean front home in Hawaii, sued the state a few yrs ago because they cut his pension. Ahh, you just gotta love the San Diego legal system and all of it's players!! LOL— November 19, 2012 8:45 a.m.
Judy Garland's Oz dress fetches over the rainbow price at auction
My bad. It was your $400k comment that thru me off. The pair of slippers you are referring to are the ones I mentioned above as being bought by AMPAS for the LACMA. However, no amount has been given for their purchase. They were supposed to be have been sold at auction last December with a pre-sale estimate of $2 million to $3 million, but they weren't sold. A group of investors, including Leo DiCaprio and Steven Spielberg helped gather enough donations to fund their purchase in February. The only thing said about how much was paid is that they were “very, very valuable.” Probably didn't even make the news in SD, but obviously, in LA it was pretty widely reported. http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00048108.html— November 15, 2012 9:03 a.m.
Judy Garland's Oz dress fetches over the rainbow price at auction
Those were sold at Debbie Reynolds' auction last summer. She had a HUGE collection of Hollywood memorabilia. Marilyn Monroe’s dress from The Seven Year Itch went for something like $4.5 million. There are actually only four pairs known to still exist. One pair, as you pointed out, was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, 6 or 8 yrs ago, probably an inside job contracted by a collector. Another pair is in the Smithsonian. I believe the pair at Debbie Reynolds' auction, which ended up going for over $500k, are in a private collection. And the 4th pair was bought by AMPAS earlier this year. They will eventually go on display in a museum that AMPAS is working on with the LACMA.— November 13, 2012 10:45 a.m.
Budweiser: The beer that made Zemeckis grimace
I thought everyone knew that the Duke wore a rug for something like 30 yrs. He didn't talk about it but he never denied it, either. Supposedly, one time a reporter asked him about it and said It’s not phony, It’s real hair. Of course, it’s not mine, but it’s real. ! http://sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2012/nov/0…— November 9, 2012 9:14 a.m.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission denies request for hearing on San Onofre
You appear to have forgotten to mention in your story that the NRC did refer portions of Friends of the Earth's request to commission staff and the NRC's Atomic Safety and Licensing Board panel, which it seems can conduct hearings and that the Friends of the Earth issued a statement of its own, saying the group was "encouraged by the tone and content" of the NRC order and would pursue the issue through commission staff and the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board as directed"— November 9, 2012 9:02 a.m.

Porn producers eager to flee LA after passage of Measure B
Look up New Hampshire v. Theriault and California v. Freeman. Pandering and prostitution laws laws are the problem. California and New Hampshire are the only two states that have state Supreme Court cases that have held that the production of pornography is NOT prostitution and/or pandering and is rather a First Amendment free speech right. SCOTUS refused to hear Ca.'s appeal when the State Supremes ruled against them and I believe that NH didn't even bothered trying to take the case to SCOTUS.That's is why porn is a legal and recognized business in California and would be in NH if someone wanted to produce it there.— November 9, 2012 7:39 a.m.
Who's Mr. Clean? Larry Remer? Voice of San Diego?
Don Bauder, Actually, Smith served slightly less than 8 months. It was 42 days in the County Jail downtown and six months in the Work Furlough Center in National City. While there, he did indeed tend to the rose bushes as part of his duties as gardener. Smith was sent there instead of one the county's honor camps because of his age. It is closer to a hospital so it is used for inmates in fragile health. And as I am sure you will recall, one of the reasons his sentenced was reduced on appeal was the assertion by his doctor that he was in failing health and only had a life expectancy of 3 yrs, I think it was. I reread the old SI article and an old one by Jack Williams. According to them, Alessio and one of his brothers were indicted in April 1970 for income-tax irregularities over a four-year period starting in 1963 and They ended up pleading guilty in early 1971 and. His brother spent about 6 months in prison and he spent about two years at Terminal Island, Lompoc and McNeil Island in Washington. He received his prison "favors" while he was at Lompoc. His son was convicted in 1973 on a felony charge of providing an illegal gratuity to a federal prison official, spent a few months in the pen and paid a pittance of a fine. Aah, the good old days. We're leaving this afternoon on a trip to celebrate our 62nd birthdays, which we both will have in the next couple of weeks. Perhaps we'll resume in a few weeks. The comments here after the election should make for "interesting" reading, to say the least. Decisions are made by those who show up. Everyone needs to show up on Tuesday.— November 4, 2012 10:08 a.m.

Humor surfpuppy619, humor. Most people I know, in fact almost everyone I know, actually do know that before refinishing wood, be it paint, stain or oil, you have to prep the wood. Scraping, sanding , whatever method you choose.. And yeah, I have never been in a single home in my life that didn't have wood in it. Have you? Doors, floors, baseboards, casings, trim, kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, ceilings, rafters, fences, decks, columns, pilasters, patios, window frames and casings, not to mention furniture. Never had one of your dogs chew on a piece of furniture when they were a puppy? Yeah like I said, I have never been in a home anywhere that doesn't have wood products in it and on it. And no knowing how to refinish wood is not an advanced woodworking skill and barely a woodworking skill at all. When our oldest daughter was maybe 6 or 7 we repainted her room for her and she helped. It would not be a stretch to say that she had NO woodworking skills at all. So how about going over to the freezer, pulling out your sense of humor and thawing it out for a while. For someone who shoots their mouth off here as much as anybody and claims not to care whether anyone likes it or not, you're way too sensitive. Enjoy your weekend!!!!!!— November 3, 2012 4:56 p.m.
Who's Mr. Clean? Larry Remer? Voice of San Diego?
I could be wrong, and if so please correct me weren't their "dirty deeds" completely separate. Wasn't Smith accused of embezzling millions from his own companies and then didn't he end being convicted of "only" grand theft and sentenced to just 1 year? I remember the LAT article saying he spent most of his time tending rose bushes and mowing lawns. and got out after 6 or 8 months. And didn't Alessio go to the joint for income tax evasion, something to do with his running the Caliente racetrack betting? I know that Smith was able to drag out his trial for a while and it was like 4 or 5 yrs. The only recollections I have of Alessio back then are what I read, mostly from a big article in SI, because I was at college at the time, but it seemed that Alessio went down several years earlier, maybe late 60's or 70-71, for a couple of years. So he was out before Smith was probably indicted and waaaay before story you referenced. And that must have at least 15yrs ago because it;s been almost that long since he died— November 3, 2012 4:37 p.m.
