Whan I was a kid, you could climb the El Cortez on the fire escapes. The ball room at the top was open and still had some of it's former elegance. The view of San Diego in the late 80's from on top of the 'Cortez was amazing. I still remember sitting on the edge of the building, hanging my feet off the parapet. The climb up there was pretty hairy - you had to walk past some occupied appartments, clanging around on the metal fire escapes. - Joe— May 12, 2008 7:01 a.m.
