San Diego's Merrill Lynch whacked
We had a mayor who got mixed up with the investment types a while back. I remember his face turning colors during a cross examination by Deputy D.A. Huffman when he was caught in an obvious lie and couldn't squirm out of it. And now he's suing the city to replace his wife's breasts. Merrill Lynch involved in financial shenanigans with a foreign national? No problem in San Diego, just ask her highness, our former D.A. who probably knew some of the principals from a fund raiser. The irony is she's a Republican and it is the Democratic Party which was taken over by investment bankers. Go figure.— December 22, 2017 9:40 p.m.
Senator's bill to stave off utilities' rape of ratepayers?
What about the "public" is the Utility Commission struggling with. They are there to protect us and manage the "public" asset to all of our benefit, not the share holders of utilities' stocks. This is another example of Wall Street sticking its' greedy head into our lives, because this is all about share holders rights, not ours.— November 20, 2017 9:29 a.m.
Short-term vacation rental explosion
We have a housing crisis. There have been many solutions offered up through the last decades but there is always a reason more low income housing can't be built. It is great for property owners who routinely fight any low income projects like an existential threat. The zoning laws appear to be unenforced depending on who gets elected City Attorney. We need more units. The high rents are contributing to the homeless crisis which just created an epidemic. How much worse does it need to get before we actually do something?— October 20, 2017 10:11 p.m.
Could Stephan surrender Cate investigation?
I think as far as the legal question is concerned it is a no brainer. Stephan has a conflict a first year law student could see and needs to step aside for the Attorney General. Assuming they have not been co-opted, we could expect an honest disposition. This is not high legal scholarship no one except an expert in the area could understand. It is as fundamental as the alphabet. We need the state to come in or we won't get an honest answer.— October 13, 2017 4:11 p.m.
Emotionally distressed biker sues city
False arrest is a big deal for those of you who claim no harm no foul. If he was singled out then something needs to be done. The arresting officer and his or her supervisor that approved it need to suffer the consequences we all do when we screw up at work. This screw up took away a human beings freedom for some hours and cost him considerable monies. That damage is quantifiable. But the humility of being handcuffed, transported like that and then strip searched and booked and incarcerated are difficult to price. These things continue to happen because there is no penalty for the perps, in this case the police. Officers can be very cavalier about taking away someone's freedom, as if it is just an inconvenience we all have to suffer. We don't if the police do their jobs that we pay them to do. And if they are held accountable chances are it won't happen as often in the future.— September 16, 2017 9:36 p.m.
San Diego still cheaping out on cops
Oh my god, she was working under cover and saw a young kid do drugs? Did she receive disability pay immediately and life time counseling? While it is a legitimate issue if we are not paying a fair wage to our city employees, she might not be the standard bearer for such complaints. What are we on the hook for her retirement? Between her and dumanis we're going to pay what, half a million a year for their retirements? Sometimes it is appropriate to shoot the messenger. What genius hired her knowing she was gone so quickly? It appears that employees aren't being over paid but their bosses feel they are owed a great deal. Maybe we can make adjustments to make it more fair for everyone.— September 14, 2017 7:30 p.m.
Rooster gripes in City Heights
If you maintain an animal in the city or close to the city and it disturbs other people living close to or in the city I would maintain one has to decide if you want to grow your food in a residential area or live in it. I love animals of all kinds but I also eat them almost every day. I make a decision. When you decide your comfort is more important than your neighbors, someone is going to probably dispute that decision and the dispute is where it can get ugly. You don't get to destroy your neighbors comfort to make your own. That's called living together.— August 20, 2017 11:33 a.m.
Koch brothers to fund San Diego paramedic takeover
I was forced to use these guys once to get to the VA hospital and they hounded me for months for payment after I advised them to contact the VA literally a dozen times or more. I think the bill was over 1600 for about 2-3 miles to the hospital. I walked into the ambulance and out at the hospital. The paras were both clinically obese and disheveled. I was kind of paranoid just from their physical appearance and demeanor. Not the confident professional you like to encounter when you think your health is in jeopardy. When I complained to my councilman at the time, his honor himself sir eagle or whatever his name is, I was treated like I offended the candidates mother and told to take a hike.— August 15, 2017 4:04 p.m.
Black teenagers stopped in Memorial Park, patted down, handcuffed
But it was a high crime area so they were suspicious. NOT. This is no different than New York P.D. stopping and frisking all kids of color. The people who came up with this in the P.D. need to go away, this is so racist and obviously illegal that it never should have happened and the officials who put their stamp on it need to be terminated. They cannot be entrusted with the civil rights of citizens. That means they aren't qualified. No different than having a physical impairment that would prevent the person from doing the job. This requirement occurs between the ears and is just as important. if we can't trust the people we give guns to we need to take the guns away.— August 9, 2017 5:34 p.m.
Mountain bikers fret over office complex called Torrey Highlands Preserve
I don't know any mountain bikers personally, but I know their equipment is very expensive. If they have the resources to purchase these high tech bikes, I suspect they have the resources to recreate just about anywhere in San Diego County they want to. Why this particular piece of our county is so sacrosanct to them I don't know. But the one biker quote pretty much said it all. "It's my serenity". It is actually the serenity of all San Diegans, not the few well heeled bikers that can afford to live close enough to feel they own it. I'm not pro development but there is a propensity of the well born to assert ownership of things they don't actually own. Like public property meant to be used by all residents. We went through this with the coast back in the 50's. Now I guess we have to reclaim our parks too.— July 11, 2017 5:59 p.m.
