The Really Real Reason We Celebrate Cinco de Mayo
Or, as the late and great Frank Zappa put it, "You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer." I am happy to report that we also have some excellent beer here :)

Chingobingo, a couple of things to keep in mind: First, often times when you write here, people aren't going to have a chance to notice it. There simply isn't enough room on the Reader's splash page to list everything recent, so it might not be noticed because of the activity that follows your posting of an entry. Second, I'm among those that, unfortunately, don't think to look in the "blogs" section here every day. While I really enjoy reading many of them, some approaches and stories really aren't my thing while other stuff that gets into here is spam or advertisement (which is dutifully removed by Reader staff, but sometimes they are too busy to remove it immediately). Third, and more important, the best way to receive reader input is to get involved and give your own input when you read something here that moves you. You make online pals that way, and then when you post an entry, invariably someone will see that you've posted something and comment on it. And then people see that someone has commented and it sort of gets the ball rolling. Hope that helps, and good job with this entry. I missed reading it when you wrote it, it's a good story.

The Hit Man I Can't Forget
Yep, that was Club 88. We didn't have to pay for play in that place, I reckon that was one reason we did that gig. I have a pretty good story about Black Flag as well, but I'll have to bring some brain cells back to life to remember it fully, it happened at a club in Orange County, they literally screwed us out of a gig there. We played it later, but it wasn't the same, they were banned from that place by then. I saw X in Hollywood several times, great band, I think I still have a bunch of cassette tapes around here somewhere. I saw the Circle Jerks, they opened for Missing Persons at the Whiskey. Good times. So far as HoB, I really want to produce a link, but I spent over an hour last night on it and I can't find one. But there was a club there by that name, long before the Blues Brothers and what followed. Maybe in the future, Strip historians will be more kind :)

Yeah, this is what I was thinking as well. So far as the body being dumped in the ocean, I'd entertain the notion that perhaps it wasn't. But there's nothing to gain by claiming that Bin Laden is dead if he isn't. They killed him. Some things transcend the political.

I lived in Los Angeles during that time, and I remember that club. I was never inside. I laid down tracks at a studio not far from there. I think I was eighteen. But it was there. We played several clubs nearby, the Troubadour I remember well, and the Whiskey. There were other clubs in Los Angeles, I remember Club 88 in particular, I bet I still have memorabilia from that outing. But there was a club in Hollywood called House Of Blues. KROQ offered us a spot there. We declined because our manager wasn't around to negotiate a deal and we didn't know the ownership. At that time in Los Angeles, the clubs were so overrun with talent that they were starting to charge bands for playing there. Imagine that. But it's true.

The Hit Man I Can't Forget
Nathan East is, and always has been, a bass guitar player. He played with Clapton and Knopfler in a tour they did recently (in the last decade, he did an amazing version of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home", look that up if you want a treat for your ears). He is likely the most respected bass player in rock and jazz today, go look him up if you don't believe it. Coralcay knows his music, and East knows the bass guitar. There was a House Of Blues in Hollywood on the strip and it predates the internet. It wasn't affiliated with the modern House Of Blues, it was an independent nightclub. It closed prior to the ex-owner of Hard Rock opening up the franchise that all now know. I would love to provide evidence, but the internet won't offer any. But it existed, and many excellent groups played there. I don't remember who owned that club, wish I could provide more details.

Where were you when????
"Is Bin Laden really dead? Where's the DNA evidence? How do we know he wasn't killed long ago, and his buddies didn't fake all those tapes?" Aren't you the same guy who complained about criminals made to pose with weapons? You can't have it both ways. It's quite the convenient ideology to demand evidence on the one hand and then to be disgusted by evidence on the other. There's no such thing as proof, there's only evidence, and if you circumstantially disallow evidence based on your own ideology then you'll never have an opportunity to be convinced of anything.

Chingobingo, a couple of things to keep in mind: First, often times when you write here, people aren't going to have a chance to notice it. There simply isn't enough room on the Reader's splash page to list everything recent, so it might not be noticed because of the activity that follows your posting of an entry. Second, I'm among those that, unfortunately, don't think to look in the "blogs" section here every day. While I really enjoy reading many of them, some approaches and stories really aren't my thing while other stuff that gets into here is spam or advertisement (which is dutifully removed by Reader staff, but sometimes they are too busy to remove it immediately). Third, and more important, the best way to receive reader input is to get involved and give your own input when you read something here that moves you. You make online pals that way, and then when you post an entry, invariably someone will see that you've posted something and comment on it. And then people see that someone has commented and it sort of gets the ball rolling. Hope that helps, and good job with this entry. I missed reading it when you wrote it, it's a good story.— May 8, 2011 3:16 a.m.

The Hit Man I Can't Forget
Yep, that was Club 88. We didn't have to pay for play in that place, I reckon that was one reason we did that gig. I have a pretty good story about Black Flag as well, but I'll have to bring some brain cells back to life to remember it fully, it happened at a club in Orange County, they literally screwed us out of a gig there. We played it later, but it wasn't the same, they were banned from that place by then. I saw X in Hollywood several times, great band, I think I still have a bunch of cassette tapes around here somewhere. I saw the Circle Jerks, they opened for Missing Persons at the Whiskey. Good times. So far as HoB, I really want to produce a link, but I spent over an hour last night on it and I can't find one. But there was a club there by that name, long before the Blues Brothers and what followed. Maybe in the future, Strip historians will be more kind :)— May 5, 2011 2:54 p.m.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking as well. So far as the body being dumped in the ocean, I'd entertain the notion that perhaps it wasn't. But there's nothing to gain by claiming that Bin Laden is dead if he isn't. They killed him. Some things transcend the political.— May 5, 2011 12:31 p.m.

I lived in Los Angeles during that time, and I remember that club. I was never inside. I laid down tracks at a studio not far from there. I think I was eighteen. But it was there. We played several clubs nearby, the Troubadour I remember well, and the Whiskey. There were other clubs in Los Angeles, I remember Club 88 in particular, I bet I still have memorabilia from that outing. But there was a club in Hollywood called House Of Blues. KROQ offered us a spot there. We declined because our manager wasn't around to negotiate a deal and we didn't know the ownership. At that time in Los Angeles, the clubs were so overrun with talent that they were starting to charge bands for playing there. Imagine that. But it's true.— May 4, 2011 11:34 p.m.

Nathan East is, and always has been, a bass guitar player. He played with Clapton and Knopfler in a tour they did recently (in the last decade, he did an amazing version of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home", look that up if you want a treat for your ears). He is likely the most respected bass player in rock and jazz today, go look him up if you don't believe it. Coralcay knows his music, and East knows the bass guitar. There was a House Of Blues in Hollywood on the strip and it predates the internet. It wasn't affiliated with the modern House Of Blues, it was an independent nightclub. It closed prior to the ex-owner of Hard Rock opening up the franchise that all now know. I would love to provide evidence, but the internet won't offer any. But it existed, and many excellent groups played there. I don't remember who owned that club, wish I could provide more details.— May 4, 2011 10:43 p.m.

"Is Bin Laden really dead? Where's the DNA evidence? How do we know he wasn't killed long ago, and his buddies didn't fake all those tapes?" Aren't you the same guy who complained about criminals made to pose with weapons? You can't have it both ways. It's quite the convenient ideology to demand evidence on the one hand and then to be disgusted by evidence on the other. There's no such thing as proof, there's only evidence, and if you circumstantially disallow evidence based on your own ideology then you'll never have an opportunity to be convinced of anything.— May 4, 2011 8:15 p.m.
